Tom Petty's youngest daughter recalls singer in emotional tribute

Tom Petty performs

Tom Petty, the frontman of the Heartbreakers, passed away Monday in Los Angeles after suffering a major cardiac arrest. "Unbelievable that one week to the day of this performance at the Hollywood Bowl, last day of the 40th anniversary tour, Tom would have left us".

Thank you Tom Petty for your music, for your generosity and for the lasting impact you will leave on this world.

This was corrected when it emerged that the rocker was still on life support, though his family had already signed a "do not resuscitate" order on the musician. Petty was there. Maybe he soundtracked your little league games, your first time getting high, your freshman year of college.

By Petty's third album, "Damn the Torpedoes", he and the band broke through to the mainstream. It spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, although at the time, those lyrics were censored by MTV and mainstream radio stations.

For the sake of conversation and because he has so many great songs, here's a list of ten of his best.

Mudcrutch eventually split when Petty and a few other members joined the Heartbreakers.

Brothers Osborne: This day is a tough one. Within the space of two years, Petty followed his runaway hit solo LP with another Traveling Wilburys album as well as a new Heartbreakers album.

John Mayer, who has covered Petty's "Free Fallin", tweeted that "I loved Tom Petty and I covered his songs because I wanted know what it felt like to fly".

"(The song is) about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true", Petty said.

This 1993 song actually first appeared on the band's "Greatest Hits" album. After the legal case was settled, Petty and his band released the album on a specially created imprint called Backstreet Records, and the album went to No. 2 on the charts. "I Won't Back Down", which peaked at No. 12 in 1989, was briefly used in George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign, according to rollingstone.com. They chose this song as their entrance music as they built to the ultimate goal of winning it all. The strip-mall poetry of "American Girl" had given way to something more like a David Lynch image-a girl in her underwear looking down from a hotel room at the pigeons in Market Square, Indianapolis, as night falls.

And hey! Tom Petty didn't just make music.

"The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty".

However, in 1997, Tom Petty fell on hard times.

Petty's influence was so broad and far-reaching as to be rendered slightly invisible, in an odd way: Any bar band can sound like him, though none can do it as well as him. "I won't say goodbye my friend, For you and I will meet again".

In 1994, Petty released his second solo album "Wildflowers", which included the single "You Don't Know How it Feels".
