Argentina: Drab 0-0 Draw Against Peru Leaves Lionel Messi And Co

Jorge Sampaoli's side sit precariously in fifth place in the South America qualifying group

Jorge Sampaoli's side have now gone five competitive matches without any of their players scoring from open play.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Gago and Messi enjoyed a fruitful partnership in the 2014 World Cup campaign in which Argentina reached the final but injuries have curtailed his worldwide career since 2015.

Despite Argentina's recent troubles, however, Xavi believes they can go on to win the World Cup should they eventually qualify for the tournament.

But Sampaoli believes in his side's chances of reaching Russian Federation 2018, with Colombia and Peru, fourth and fifth respectively, to meet on the final matchday. Although their opponents are already out of the reckoning for a place in Russian Federation next summer, Jorge Sampaoli's men face a hard game, especially when factoring in the thin air of the Ecuadorian capital.

Argentina's fortunes largely rest on how other teams perform next week, when they will meet already-eliminated Ecuador who now sit two places below them in the table.

The hosts went back up the other end when Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez rammed home a close-range finish after Arturo Vidal's shot was only partially saved.

Already qualified Brazil drew 0-0 with Bolivia in on Thursday. But if they lose, they will fail to qualify if both Argentina and Paraguay win. A draw wouldn't be ideal, but scenarios exist in which Argentina still gets through. Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia are now out of race for the next-year's World Cup.

Argentina are in fifth place, level on 24 points with Peru, and need a result on Thursday to keep their hopes of automatic qualification alive.

Argentina, one of the giants of world football, have not been at their dominating best in the World Cup qualifiers.

Argentina is out with a loss.

The fact that Colombia and Peru clash in the last game of the group could also help Sampaoli's side.

Argentina have it all to do in their final match, against Ecuador.

The final round of games kick-off at 00:30 BST on Wednesday, 11 October.

The match has been scheduled for 8:30 pm local time, 5am IST. Man for man Argentina arguably has the most talented squad of players in the worldwide game.

This match will not be shown in the UK.
